Measurements in refinery FCCs

Mettler Toledo has recently produced a white paper discussing why tunable diode laser (TDL) technology is the ideal choice for Fluidised Catalytic Cracking (FCC) unit applications.
FCC is an essential operation in most modern refineries. FCC units crack the long chain hydrocarbons in heavy gas oils into short chain hydrocarbons to produce gasoline and fuel oils.
Within the white paper, Mettler Toledo also discusses catalytic regeneration and the measurement of CO2 and CO.
The company says that if the regeneration rate is too fast and the temperature too high, the catalyst will become overheated and unwanted sintering may occur, with consequent reduction in efficiency and potential catalyst destruction.
Likewise, if the rate of regeneration is too low, then there will be insufficient oxidation of the carbon, leading to poor catalyst activity and inefficient cracking.
