Report predicts engineering exodus
4 Jan 2016
The annual Investors in People (IoP) employee sentiment report suggests almost half of those working in the engineering and manufacturing sectors will look for a new job this year.
The report also says a quarter of those in manufacturing and engineering careers are “unhappy in their current jobs”.
Just over a fifth (21%) blame lack of career progression, while 22% suggest they do not feel valued as an employee.
The figures are taken from the IoP’s Job Exodus Trends 2016 report in which 2,000 people were surveyed.
Paul Devoy, head of Investors in People, said: “Improved salaries over recent months means that pay is less of a gripe for UK workers. But longstanding issues around poor management and how valued people feel in their work continue to make UK workers miserable.
“If employers addressed these factors, they would have a more committed workforce and far fewer resources tied up in constant recruitment drives.”
The report suggests a number of “simple measures” could help buck the trend of employees scrutinising their current positions.
“Feeling valued, understanding their role in the organisation and how they can grow with an organisation are all big concerns for UK workers,” Devoy said.
“Saying thank you, involving employees in decisions and giving them responsibility over their work are basic ways to make staff happier, and more likely to stay.
“Employers also win, with a more committed workforce, higher retention and a clearer view of the future.”
