Survey to discover apprentices’ opinions launched
18 Jan 2016
A survey conducted by the Industry Apprentice Council (IAC) is giving apprentices the chance to comment on their career choices.
The survey will look at the advice and guidance given before becoming an apprentice, as well as seeking to determine the changing perceptions of apprenticeships.
“The power of the apprentices’ voice is seen by the fact the survey is taken very seriously,” said Julia Chippendale, managing director at industry awarding organisation EAL, who founded the IAC.
“[The survey] is presented to the relevant skills ministers, to MPs, stakeholders and policymakers. The first-hand experience of the young people both before, during and after embarking on apprenticeships produces compelling evidence which must be heard and acted upon,” Chippendale added.
Last year’s survey received in excess of 1,300 responses, with results shedding light on how apprentices feel their career choices are portrayed nationwide, as well as the support they gained from their school or college, said Semta, who is collaborating with the IAC.
Semta chief executive Ann Watson said: “With the government’s ambitious three million apprenticeship target we know policymakers agree that apprenticeships carry equal weight to higher education, but previous surveys have consistently shown the need to see that perception penetrate our schools and colleges, so that young people are given all the options and the best start to a career in whatever industry they choose.
“We would urge all companies employing apprentices to encourage the young people to complete this survey. We strongly believe apprentices themselves should have a say in the future of apprenticeships and the IAC is a great way to give them a voice.”
Those wishing to take part in the survey, which runs until Friday 19th February, can do so here.
Results are expected this Spring.
