Mars recalls chocolate bars over plastic contamination fears
1 Mar 2016
Food group Mars has issued a Europe-wide recall of some of its chocolate products, following the discovery of plastic in a confectionary item.
The move came in response to what it describes as an isolated incident, after a customer in Germany found a small piece of red plastic in a Snickers bar purchased on January 8.
According to newswire reports, the piece of plastic has been traced back to its factory in the southern Dutch town of Veghel, and came from a protective cover used in the manufacturing process.
Mars said it had made a precautionary decision to voluntarily recall a selection of Snickers, Mars, Milky Way and Celebrations products produced in its Netherlands factory.
The recall has been extended to all markets served by the facility – spanning a total of 55 countries – for a selection of products manufactured at the Netherlands facility between December 5 to January 18.
“While the number of Mars products affected is limited, they have been shipped to numerous countries outside the Netherlands, including some duty free retailers,” the company said.
“As a precaution, the product recall is being implemented in all markets served by our Netherlands facility.”
The company has published a list of products available in the UK that have been recalled.
If a product is not labelled ‘Mars Netherlands,’ it has not been included in the recall, the company said.
