BASF splashes $3.2bn on Chemetall

BASF has bought a German-based surface treatment business from US specialty chemicals company, Albemarle.
The company said its $3.2bn (£2.17bn) purchase of Chemetall would boost its coatings portfolio.
With 21 production sites worldwide and 2,500 employees, Chemetall is a global supplier of applied surface treatments and services for metal, plastic and glass substrates across a wide range of industries.

Chemetall was acquired by Albemarle as part of the acquisition of Rockwood Holdings in January 2015.
Its sale to BASF is subject to regulatory approval, and is expected to close by the end of 2016.
