Graduate engineering pay on the increase, says EEF report
16 Nov 2016
The average pay for engineers in the UK has risen 2% on last year, while graduates’ pay has seen a 4% increase, according to a report by EEF which highlights a shortage of skilled staff as the driving force for growth.
Engineering graduates can now expect to take home £28,000, in comparison to £26,890 last year and £22,984 when related to graduate pay across other industries.
According to the report, this means engineering graduates now earn over £5,000 or 22% per year more than other graduates within the UK.
Tim Thomas, director of employment and skills policy at EEF, said: “Engineering skills are in high demand and short supply, which is why they continue to command a premium and why employers are prepared to pay it.
“Offering an attractive salary remains the first line of defence for firms fiercely competing to attract and retain skilled workers vital to their business.”
The report, which is based on responses from over 240 companies, covering salary data for almost 6,000 managers and engineers throughout Britain, also shows a senior engineer can expect £41,800 on average in the UK.
Elsewhere in the report, senior research and development engineers see the largest pay increase of all with a 28% hike in basic median pay from last year.
