IGas wins fracking approval in Nottinghamshire
18 Dec 2016
Nottinghamshire County Council’s Planning and Licensing Committee has given fracking firm IGas consent to drill two exploratory wells in Misson Springs, North Nottinghamshire.
According to IGas chief executive officer Stephen Bowler, the company will now establish whether gas extraction at the site could be commercially viable.
IGas also hopes to address the issue of security of supply that the UK faces, Bowler added.
“We believe the future of the area is as important as its rich history and, with the demise of coal mining in the area, see an important role for shale development in the creation of future jobs and prosperity.”
The decision has been welcomed by UKOOG, the representative body for the UK’s onshore oil & gas sector.
“This follows the successful applications for onshore oil and gas developments in North Yorkshire and Lancashire and shows positive momentum towards finding out what natural gas resources we have beneath our feet that can be developed for the good of the whole of the UK,” said Ken Cronin, UKOOG chief executive.
