Manufacturers in North West ‘desperate’ for Brexit clarity
26 Oct 2018
Manufacturers in the North West of England are “desperate for clarity” as Brexit negotiations reach a pivotal stage, according to EEF head of corporate affairs Hilary Douglas.
Douglas’ remarks coincide with EEF hosting a conference in Manchester today (Friday) to address concerns and identify opportunities presented by Brexit.
Douglas said: “Manufacturers remain desperate for clarity as we reach a pivotal point in Brexit negotiations, and the high levels of interest in today’s event and our research into the North West’s views on Brexit underlines this.
“Getting Brexit right for manufacturers is not only critical for the sector, but also for the UK economy.”
The event is the fourth in the EEF Brexit roadshow series and was established in response to EEF members calling for greater clarity on the implications of Brexit on their day-to-day operations.
It also follows research in September by EEF that reveals 75% of manufacturers in the region are not prepared for a no-deal Brexit, while almost half (49%) say they do not plan on preparing for ‘no deal’.
According to the research, a further 83% say it is important that the Brexit negotiations ensure there are no tariffs on European Union (EU) goods and 81% say the same of ensuring full access to the single market.
Jill Rutter, programme director at the Institute for Government, who is delivering the keynote address at the event, added: “Manufacturers across this region seek clarity on Brexit as the Government enters into final negotiations. Manchester has a rich history of manufacturing and the industry must make preparations for all outcomes in the coming weeks and months.”
The UK is due to leave the EU on Friday 29 March 2019.
