SMEs’ 4.0 solution lies in a Box, say universities

A UK university initiative promises to provide small businesses with instant access to 4.0 manufacturing techniques all in a single unit.
The ‘Factory in a Box’ project provides ‘intelligent factories’ distributed, linked and controlled within a structure the size of a shipping container.
Designed by experts at the universities of Loughborough and Birmingham, the FIAB initiative is supported through the Energy Research Accelerator project, funded by Innovate-UK.
Professor Martin Freer, director of the Birmingham Energy Institute and the Energy Research Accelerator said: “Factory in a Box is a ground-breaking initiative which an exciting opportunity for small companies to rapidly transition from technology developer to providing a product stream to market.
“It supports small companies developing step change energy technologies in having a real impact in terms of the global transition to a low carbon energy generation.”
