IET re-engineers its brand with website relaunch
29 Jan 2019
Rebranding is a phrase more common to the world of marketing and PR but even august engineering bodies, it seems, are not immune to the concept.
The 158-year-old Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) marked a change of image this week with the launch of its new website and logo.
Announcing the move, IET chief executive and secretary Nigel Fine commented: “Engineering and technology is transforming the way we live, the products we use and the services we rely on. Future generations have the power to change the world as we know it and be at the forefront of new innovation.
“Our re-engineered brand reflects the exciting and inspirational world of engineering in the 21st century and represents a modern, relevant and inclusive Institution. The logo now includes an ‘equals’ sign, helping us to communicate our vision of ‘working to engineer a better world’.”
True to form, the strategy is the culmination of two years of planning and consultation with some of the IET’s nearly 160,000 members worldwide. It will be rolled out in several phases this year.

The website, which was last redesigned in 2011, is being relaunched as the first phase of the overhaul.
On its new site, the institution explains: “Research showed us that perception of the IET centre on being trusted, dependable and reassuring but, in recent years, it had become apparent that our brand – in particular, our visual black and white identity and tone of voice - wasn’t working for us.
“Over the past two years, with input from our members, customers and volunteers across the world, we worked with a branding agency that specialises in membership organisations to create a new brand strategy that’s fit for the future and better reflects the breadth and diversity of our activities.”
