Investigation reveals which engineers are most in demand

Development, technical and software engineers can look forward to burgeoning employment prospects, claims an investigation into labour shortages in the profession.
Manufacturer Taylor Studwelding collated vacancy statistics across theUK to discover which engineering roles in the UK are in the highest demand.
Its study revealed the highest demand, not surprisingly, is in Greater London which averaged nearly 60,000 engineering vacancies across job sites Indeed and Reed at the start of April 2022.
However demand varies considerably according to the type of engineering specialism. Development engineers were in the shortest supply in the capital, with nearly 10,000 vacancies followed by technical engineer roles at close to 9,000 vacancies.
On the back of high profile projects such as the creation of the Elizabeth Line, Transport for London is one of the leading employers, recording 90 vacancies on Indeed at the start of April alone. Outside London, design and development is the engineering specialism with most job opportunities.
However sales area manager at Taylor Studwelding, Andy Gillings, said there remained a lack of graduate and junior positions, with just one graduate engineering role for every 185 engineering vacancies across the UK.
“Businesses are wanting to recruit developed engineers instead of training graduates. With skilled staff in short supply, now is the time to act. Young people are encouraged to take up apprenticeships and businesses are rewarded with a bursary when taking part in an apprenticeship scheme,” said Gillings.
