Make UK welcome for Sunak PM appointment

Make UK CEO Stephen Phipson CEO of Make UK has given an encouraging response to the appointment of Rishi Sunak as leader of the Conservative Party and his installation as the new prime minister.
Phipson, a former top civil servant as well as an industry leader, said the organisation had lengthy experience of dealing with the former Chancellor.
“We look forward to welcoming the new leader of the Conservative party to Downing Street,” he stated.
“We have had a longstanding constructive relationship with Rishi Sunak during his time as Chancellor where we worked together on support for manufacturers during the pandemic and the important investment initiatives such as Super Deduction.
Sunak is the third Conservative premier in just two months, following the resignation of Boris Johnson and the short-lived succession of Liz Truss, who had failed to match Sunak’s support among MPs but garnered more Tory members’ votes during the previous leadership battle.
The new PM is regarded as a safer pair of hands than his two predecessors by many in industry and the City, an attitude reflected in Make UK’s statement.
“We will now have a Prime Minister who understands the critical importance of manufacturing, a sector that delivers millions of highly skilled jobs,” remarked Phipson.
“Britain’s manufacturers are an example of a growing success story, contributing billions of pounds to GDP every year playing a vital part in implementing the Government’s levelling up agenda, creating well-paid jobs where they are most needed around the whole of the country.”
He added it was vital that the new Prime Minister developed a plan that boosted the economy, provided stability and restored confidence.
The change of premier also prompted the departure of Jacob Rees-Mogg as Business Secretary and his replacement by Grant Shapps.
