Make engineering more visible in school, demand academics

Academics say more visibility for engineering in schools is needed to tackle labour shortfalls and promote environmental solutions reveals a new survey.
The poll by NMITE (New Model Institute for Technology & Engineering) and the Engineering Professors’ Council quizzed the UK’s engineering academics in advance of the EPC’s Engineering Academics Network Annual Congress, hosted by the college NMITE in Hereford this week.
Nearly two thirds (63%) of respondents felt that engineering should be made more visible in schools to ensure school leavers were aware it was a viable option.
NMITE’s CEO James Newby commented: “It’s clear that more needs to be done to help inform young people about engineering as an option, earlier in their learning journey. It’s important that the national curriculum reflects the diversity of careers available to school leavers within STEM.”
He added that the new T level courses in engineering, which began in September 2022, provided “a promising sign that things are moving in the right direction”.
