The deadline is fast approaching for the final chance this year to enter one of UK engineering's most prestigious team-based awards.
The Royal Academy of Engineering’s prestigious Macrobert Award, which celebrates its 55th anniversary this year, is presented to teams that combine outstanding innovation, proven commercial success and measurable benefit to society.
Coming with a £50,000 cash prize, it is open to all sizes of organisation from spin-outs to corporates – with an entry deadline of 5pm on Wednesday 31 January.
Chair of the MacRobert Award judging panel, Professor Sir Richard Friend commented: “The unsung heroes of the UK’s world-changing engineering innovations deserve to be celebrated and that’s exactly what the MacRobert Award sets out to do. We’re looking for examples where the spark of an incredible idea has been turned into something that revolutionises either the way we live, or the industries it touches.
“As long as the innovation turns heads and has achieved both commercial success and a notable societal benefit, it may well be MacRobert-worthy.”
Last year’s winner Ceres Power won for its pioneering fuel cell technology. With dialysis technology innovator Quanta winning in 2022 and genetic testing tech firm DnaNudge taking the award in 2021.
Major national names including JCB, Bombardier Aerospace, Rolls-Royce and structural engineering leaders Arup have also been recipients.
Added judging panel chair Friend: “There’s no particular formula for a winning entry, but when you see it, you know it. That’s why over the last 55 years, the award has celebrated teams at some of the UK’s most well-established companies with a global reach, as well as emerging businesses.”
