Defence investment provides ‘milestone’ grant for materials casting project

Wall Colmonoy has successfully bid for funding from the Defence Technology Exploitation Programme (DTEP) to support its scheme Project EVaCC: Experimental Vacuum Investment Casting Capability.
The £2 million Project EVaCC aims to develop cutting-edge vacuum precision investment casting, strengthening the UK’s domestic capabilities and ensuring a robust supply chain for the Ministry of Defence, said the firm.
DTEP is sponsored by the Ministry of Defence’s Directorate of Industrial Strategy and Exports and delivered through the Defence and Security Accelerator and Innovate UK.
The investment represented “a significant milestone” for Wall Colmonoy, said technical director Dr. Chris Weirman, enabling the firm to meet the MoD’s critical needs while advancing UK’s defence and aerospace capabilities.
Vacuum investment casting offers a refinement on traditional metal casting of materials, eliminating the presence of gas and air in order to limit the chance of casting defects including porosity. For defence-based industries this can offer crucial advantages in terms of precision building with materials.
“Wall Colmonoy are committed to the future of UK manufacturing and developing supply chain resilience to protect sovereign capabilities for a wide range of industrial applications on the global stage,” said Wall Colomonoy business unit manager – precision components Michael Shreeve.
“Building upon our core competencies of producing specialist alloys, we have a unique value proposition to offer our customers.”
