Degussa sells 1,3-propanediol technology to DuPont
15 Jan 2000
German firm Degussa has agreed to sell the company's 1,3-propanediol (1,3-PD) technology to DuPont for an undisclosed sum.
The process was the first in the world to make 1,3-PD from acrolein, Degussa claims. The compound as the starting material for polytrimethylene terephthalate fibres, which are used to add resilience, stain resistance and dye adhesion properties to nylon carpets.
DuPont, as the world leader in nylon carpet fibres, is best placed to commercialise 1,3-PD, says Degussa. The German company has retained the rights to supply the compound to customers in non-fibres markets, such as fine chemicals and coatings.
