Red devices for organic EL displays
20 Jul 2001
Organic EL displays have attracted considerable attention recently because of their potential use in next-generation mobile phones capable of displaying full-colour moving images. Organic EL displays offer several advantages, including high contrast and wide viewing angles. They are also thin, lightweight and highly responsive.
However, while blue and green emitting materials have already been developed for use in the displays, until now there have been no red emitting materials that demonstrated a high enough performance.
Now, Toray claims to have solved the problem with the introduction of a new EL device with high luminance efficiency and excellent colour chromaticity. The device sports a luminance efficiency of 4.5 cd/A, and chromaticity coordinates, CIE(x, y) = (0.65, 0.34). This, apparently, is the highest performance reported for such a device reported so far.
The company claims that the device represents a major breakthrough for the creation of full-colour EL displays.
