Battle builds on NFFO success
15 Jan 2000
Energy minister John Battle has set out a Government review revealing options to support renewable energy sources as they come onto the open market.
Battle commented on the success of the Non Fossil Fuel Obligation (NFFO) (see p.39) in encouraging the use of renewables. Support under NFFO will accelerate in the first decade of next century to around £150million a year.
The budget for the DTI's New and Renewable Energy Support Programme has also been increased to £43million over the next three years.
However, energy policy has proved not to be set in stone as Stephen Byers, secretary of state for trade and industry, announced that energy policy would not stand in the way of a 500MW gas-fired power station at Baglan Bay, South Wales.
