Auma actuators isolate batch reactors
15 Jan 2000
When completed, Cardiff waste water treatment works (WWTW) will be the largest WWTW ever commissioned by Dwr Cymru Welsh Water and the largest in the world. Hyder is responsible for the design of all civil works, as well as procurement of the process plant. The works will treat 540 Ml daily and serve 888 250 people for completion by December 2001.
One of the most novel aspects of the works, designed by Hyder, Alstom Projects and Laing, is the sequential batch reactor (SBR) which allows aeration, settling and decanting to take place in the same basin - the required effluent taking just four hours to produce.
The SBR inflow and outflow valves will be controlled by 130 Auma Matic Profibus actuators with each one being individually installed for Profibus field bus. This allows individual sections of the SBR to be isolated or operated independently (see p.27).
