Acid response

The water supply at BP Amoco's Grangemouth petrochemicals complex is benefiting from a pH reduction system designed by BOC Gases. The plants use CO2 injection to keep the pH of the plant's water supply below 9.
BOC retrofitted the system into the works' existing water treatment plant, adjusting the pH in the final stage before discharging. CO2 was chosen as the acidifying agent, rather than hydrochloric or sulphuric acids, because it is less aggressive and easier to control.
