Salmon breeders can breathe more easily
15 Jan 2000
Staff at Hydro Seafood's Ardtornish salmon farm at Lochaline, east of the Isle of Mull, have had their life made a lot easier thanks to the installation of continuous on-line dissolved oxygen analysers from ABB Kent-Taylor.
It used to take four people up to an hour to complete a circuit of the 30 breeding tanks, manually measuring the critical oxygen levels. Now each tank is fitted with an ABB 4600 Series dissolved oxygen transmitter, with dip and submersible probe systems, and only one duty officer is needed to oversee oxygen monitoring for the entire plant.
Should the concentration in any tank fall below the critical 70 per cent level, the duty officer is alerted via a radio paging system.
