Virtually real: Cadcentre's new models
15 Jan 2000
Process plant design specialist Cadcentre has teamed up with Shell to design what it claims is the best ever plant visualisation software.
The new version of the 'Review Reality' software incorporates processes known as shadows and anti-aliasing, explains visual systems manager David Wheeldon. These make the jagged edges in a graphical model appear smoother. With this capability embedded in the software code, and refinements which allow the package to run twice as fast on a Silicon Graphics Impact workstation, Review Reality is 'the fastest performing desktop plant walk-through product on the market,' Wheeldon claims.
The company teamed up with Shell to develop the model for use in designing the Mars drilling platforms for the Gulf of Mexico. The graphical model produced by the collaboration, shown here, 'moves us light-years ahead compared to the conventional scale plastic model method of reviewing projects, allowing us to optimise the design before any fabrication is started,' comments Robert Samudio, Shell's facilities drafting team leader.
