'First' downhole multiphase pump heads for N Sea
15 Jan 2000
A downhole multiphase pump is being installed in Texaco's Captain Field in the North sea.
Developed by Weir Pumps, which claim it as a 'world first', the pump passed an exhaustive week of tests at the company's R&D laboratory in Alloa, Scotland.
Keith Peach, Weir's business development manager said: 'The pump is preassembled onshore into the so-called Captain Y-tool completion, which incorporates a logging bypass and monitor.
'There is a huge market for a centrifugal pump capable of handling elevated gas fractions. We are confident that this technology will revolutionise the pump industry.'
The Texaco North Sea UK order, the first for the new system, follows more than three years' R&D funded by Weir, Texaco and the Offshore Supplies Office.
