Vortex captured to match output with varying inflow
15 Jan 2000
A patented method of automatically adjusting pump output to varying inflow without the use of complex, variable speed drives, has been applied to the new Cog Moors water treatment works operated by Dwr Cymru Welsh Water.
The Prerostal system from Hidrostal is used in pumping systems where incoming flows vary widely. A weir, located in front of the pump and open at one end, creates a tangential inlet. The rotational flow pattern matches the direction of the pump impeller, liquid speed varying with the water level.
The vortex created at the pump inlet ensures output varies to match inflow. When inflow increases, sump level rises, the rotational flow in the basin decreasing until normal pump output is restored.
