The government has launched a new scheme to boost the amount of material recovered from old cars from 75 per cent to `nearly all' by 2015. All the major car manufacturers, vehicle dismantlers and materials recyclers have agreed to the scheme, which involves recovering plastics, rubber and glass from the one-and-a-half-million old bangers scrapped every year, as well as just metals; designing cars to make them easier to dismantle; and finding better ways to recover materials and parts.
