Refinery seals take the heat
15 Jan 2000
Shaft seals for high temperature applications are available from Durametallic for applications in refineries. The PC100 Dura Seals, which have a cartridge, stationary bellows design, comply with API 682 (C arrangement) standards.
The seals are intended primarily for use with non-flashing hydrocarbons at up to 450 degrees C; also for other fluids such as water, sour water, caustics, amines and acids at up to 80 degrees C. Their maximum operating speed is 25m/s and pressure limit is 500psig.
The two-ply structure of the Iconel bellows copes with high pressures and unfavourable conditions better than single ply varieties, Durametallic claims. Stationary seal rings are manufactured from blister-resistant carbon, with reaction bonded silicon carbide for the rotating mating rings.
