BP Amoco funds multiphase labs

A research facility dedicated to investigating multiphase fluid flow is the first fruits of a `wider and deeper' relationship between BP Amoco and the University of Cambridge, according to chief executive John Browne. The BP Amoco Institute is set to open next summer.
The centre will focus improving techniques for predicting how oil and gas will flow out of underground reservoirs and through pipes. Institute director Peter Smith, on secondment from BP Amoco, and professor of petroleum studies Andrew Woods will lead a research team drawn from the departments of engineering, chemical engineering, earth sciences, chemistry and applied maths.
BP Amoco is supplying an initial £25million-worth of funding to the institute, which may be increased in future as research expands into other fields. `We believe Cambridge is one of the few places in the world where it is possible to gather people who are at the leading edge of different disciplines, present them with a challenge and, by solving it, break through the current limits of knowledge,' comments Browne.
