MF's interactive net woos business
15 Jan 2000
News and archive material from Miller Freeman's technical publications, including Process Engineering and other chemicals and control titles, are this month being presented on a high-speed internet.
Network provider ODI, based in Leeds, is supporting the eight subscription services on its proprietary Internet2, a high bandwidth, secure ISDN system, created for the exchange of business information. The ISDN system transfers data at least 10 times faster than normal phone lines.
As well as news items, adapted from the latest issues of the magazines, there will be 'voice and view' which enables dialogues between buyers and sellers, and manufacturers' own pages with product specifications and brochures. A directory from Dun & Bradstreet will list companies by type.
Voice and view, developed by ODI, allows users to talk to suppliers by telephone on the system, while both parties are able to annotate and change the same document on screen simultaneously.
The company information resources, designated Link Business Finders (also accessed by subscription), have been jointly developed by Miller Freeman and ODI. The news will be updated daily and the sites will give access to an online archive.
Subscription to Internet2 costs £27.50 a month and company pages can be placed with the provider for the equivalent of £100 per page per year.
