Apprentice learns to win
15 Jan 2000
A lifetime of learning has helped Stephen Ingram, a 26-year-old who works for ICI in Billingham in process investigation, to this year's Chemical Industry Association Young Person of the Year Award.
Ingram left school at 16, and studied part-time for the next eight years while working to obtain a BTEC First in engineering, a BTEC ONC and HNC in instrument control and an HNC in chemical engineering. He worked for four years as an instrumentation apprentice at ICI's Wilton site before his promotion to the investigations department.
As part of his award, Ingram will visit chemical plants in California and the Far East, and will act as a young ambassador for the industry. `I feel we must communicate to and educate people about our standing on issues such as pollution and how we strive to meet our targets,' he says.
