Loop-powered universal transducer head is IS rated
15 Jan 2000
Pepperl+Fuchs has introduced an intrinsically safe transducer head for use with thermocouples or resistance thermometers.
Designated the H-UT-Ex1, the transmitter is loop-powered and converts the temperature measurements made by sensors into a 4-20mA signal. It is fully certified EEx ia for installation in Zone 0, gas group IIC, hazardous areas. It is connected to any basic thermocouple or purely resistive thermometer, which can be deemed `simple apparatus'.
Installation is said to be easy and problem-free when the output loop is coupled to the safe area with a Zener or galvanically isolating barrier.
A programming kit is available to configure the unit for any of the common thermocouples with internal or external cold junction compensation, Pt100 or Ni100 resistance thermometers with 2,3 or 4-wire connection.
Once configured, information is retained within the transmitter head without power or sensor being connected.
