That's the spirit, keep it under control
15 Jan 2000
As part of a multimillion pound modernisation of its Port Dundas distillery in Glasgow, United Distillers has installed an ABB Advant OCS open control system to give operators in the newly developed mash house fully automatic control of the cooking and mashing operations.
The distillery produces grain spirit for United's leading brands of blended Scotch whisky, such as Johnnie Walker, Bell's and Dewar's. The control system encompasses the allocation and transfer of the raw grain through to transporting cooked batches to the fermenters.
Some 900 I/O are involved and the Advant OCS includes seven process controllers with back-up, two Advant 500 Series operator stations, a dual-function Advant operator/engineering station and an Advant IMS station. All the workstations have high resolution graphics, comprehensive windowing, and provide a platform for interfacing with plantwide management information systems through TCP/IP networking.
The Port Dundas installation follows a similar one at United's Cameronbridge Distillery near Leven, Fife, where the system is distributed throughout dry goods handling and cooking, mashing, distillation and wet handling.
