Grain research to be harvested
15 Jan 2000
Japanese rice giant Satake Corporation decided that the future of cereals research would be more strongly linked to process engineering than to food science.
Because of its process prowess, the company selected UMIST for a £1m investment to create the SatakeCentre for Grain Process Engineering (SCGPE) in the basement of the Chemical Engineering department.
SCGPE director Colin Webb told PE: `We are working on three main projects: the development of `generic fermentations' using wheat flour; a process approach to novel situations, such as recycling in flour production; and we are assisting the Agricultural Development Advisory Service (part of MAFF) and Dalgety to develop novel food products from oats, which have been long overlooked.'
