Keeping an eye on the variables
15 Jan 2000
Monitoring systems are as thick on the ground as ever at this year's show. The process and water industries are the main focus, with equipment designed to check water quality variables, such as turbidity and dissolved gas levels, and to detect gaseous emissions in, for example, stack gases. The range of equipment on show ranges from built-in on-line analysers to hand-held apparatus for roving plant operators.
Among the former is a series of water quality meters from YSI. With simple push-button operation and 100 hours of battery operation, the meters 'represent a new approach to design and construction,' according to the company, which is celebrating its half-centenary at the show. The company is also launching two new meters at the show; one which measures pH, the other doubling up to measure pH and conductivity. Other instruments measure parameters including salinity, conductivity, temperature. Dissolved oxygen meters include a probe which uses a microelectronic array which eliminates the need for stirring.
In the on-line field, ABB Kent-Taylor is exhibiting a range of on-line sensors which, along with all the usual variables, also measure concentration of fluoride and phosphate.
For those with more complex needs, Cheltenham-based CRE Group is promoting its fleet of four fully NAMAS-accredited mobile emissions laboratories. Intended for on-line sampling and analysis of gaseous and particulate emissions, the labs can travel to any site in the UK.
