Granta Design and Cambridge University's engineering department have developed a database system for engineers matching design requirements with optimum materials, shapes and manufacturing routes.
Professor of engineering at Cambridge University and chairman of Granta Design, Michael Ashby, says Cambridge Engineering Selector (CES3) arms the engineer with the full set of information to help engineers make the best possible design decisions.
`The problem is that there are literally tens of thousands of materials, thousands of standard structural shapes, and hundreds of manufacturing processes to choose from.'
The CES3 is designed for four application areas: decision support for design engineers, management of company reference information, marketing by process equipment manufacturers, and education of materials selection for process and engineering design.
