Coupling makeover extends lifetime
15 Jan 2000
A makeover on the design of Hansen HK's quick-release, self sealing couplings has recently been completed. Available from Guyson International, the couplings are displayed on stand H35.
The design changes increase service pressure ratings and extend coupling life on the 1/2in, 3/4in and 1in models in steel, intended for hydraulic duties.
The company claims the new assemblies increase the strength and corrosion resistance of the valve guide, boost flow and surge flow capabilities, while cutting extrusion of the valve seal and pressure drop.
Thicker legs and a smaller central hub strengthen the valve guide. The use of sintered 316 stainless steel boosts corrosion-resistance and enables processing at high temperatures, in a controlled atmosphere.
The redesigned valve guide and body have a more streamlined flow path; the valve seal is retained in the valve body by forming the metal partially around it. This exposes less seal profile to the flow stream resulting in smoother flow and better seal wash-out resistance.
The pressure capability of the coupling has been boosted, the plug body changed to a higher-strength steel and hardened in the locking-ball surface area. The socket release-sleeve was hardened and the body was re-designed internally to give increased wall-thickness and strength in the critical seal area.
