For independence from manufacturer-specific control hardware and software Phoenix Contact offers its solution of the open sensor/actuator bus Interbus, which is said to provide a neutral connection between peripheral components from different suppliers. Two steps are needed to ensure independence, says Phoenix: firstly, an open PC architecture should be used as a hardware platform, and secondly the worldwide programming standard IEC1131-3 must be used.
