BASF acquires SISAS's operations in Belgium
3 Jan 2001
BASF Antwerpen, a 100% subsidiary of BASF Aktiengesellschaft, Ludwigshafen, Germany, has acquired the activities of the Italian SISAS Group in Feluy, Belgium. The production includes phthalic anhydride (PA), plasticisers, maleic anhydride, bio-diesel, butanediol as well as butanediol derivates.
Through this acquisition, BASF aims to strengthen its position in the European market for butanediol and its derivatives, as well as in PA and plasticisers. The deal involves annual production capacities of 92,000 metric tons of PA, 125,000 metric tons of butanediol (including butanediol derivatives and the precursor maleic anhydride) and 95,000 metric tons of plasticisers at the Feluy site.
Phthalic anhydride is used in the manufacture of plasticisers and polyester resins. Butanediol and its derivates are used in a number of plastics, special solvents as well as in elastomers.
The deal still has to be approved by the European Commission in Brussels.
