DSM forges melamine link with US specialist
15 Jan 2000
DSM has bolstered its melamine division by acquiring two new high-pressure technologies to make the widely-used monomer. American firm Melamine Chemicals (MCI) has sold the technologies, known as M-II and M-IV, to DSM for an undisclosed sum.
The deal gives DSM the worldwide rights to MCI's patents, although the US firm will retain the right to use its technology to build two new plants in the States. Moreover, DSM has agreed to help MCI adapt its low-pressure melamine plant `to implement certain improvements developed by DSM'. The firms are to collaborate on a joint R&D project to further improve the high-pressure processes, using MCI's M-II plant in Donaldsville for testing.
