Island waste to produce energy

West Midlands-based Birwelco has been awarded a £9 million contract for the engineering, procurement and construction of an energy-from-waste facility in Lerwick on the Shetland Islands. A single stream 3.3 tonne/h solid waste incinerator will burn 20000 tonnes of rubbish a year, generating heat for a local district heating scheme.
