Acid test for non-asbestos seals
15 Jan 2000
Up until now process plants handling concentrated sulphuric and hydrochloric acids have had to rely on compressed asbestos fibre gaskets for the safe and efficient sealing of flanges.
But now sealing specialist James Walker has introduced a non-asbestos material, called Acido, that resists mineral acids and many other hazardous and aggressive fluids such as alkalis, solvents, hydrocarbons, refrigerants and high temperature steam.
Developed for the chemical and petrochemical industries, Acido is made from special blends of inorganic and organic fibres, bonded with a chemically resistant elastomer. It operates at a maximum temperature of 200 degreesC or up to 60bar pressure.
There are five standard thicknesses, from 0.5 to 2.0mm, and sheet sizes are 2m31.5m and 1m31.5m. Precision cut gaskets of any shape, size and quantity can be supplied from any of James Walker's 11 UK regional sales centres and international outlets.
