Clinton's chemicals caution
15 Jan 2000
American chemicals firms could lose millions of dollars in trade if the US fails to ratify the chemical weapons convention, President Clinton has warned. The convention's opponents, led by right-wing senator Jesse Helms, have argued that the treaty will be difficult to verify and will lead to `intrusive' inspections of US facilities. However, Clinton pointed out that if the US fails to ratify, it will be banned from trading in a range of chemicals and pesticides specified by the treaty.
