A number of risk assessment aids have been developed for the process industry. New RISK software, by AEA Technology, predicts the likelihood of accidents and can model the extent of explosions or fires to show the potential damage, and the threat to staff. The software uses Microsoft Excel to allow staff easy access to underlying data assumptions.
The Chemical Industries Association (CIA) is publishing a guidance booklet for compiling product Safety Data Sheets. The booklet advises staff on obtaining health, safety and environmental information required by the Chemicals Hazard Information and Packaging for Supply regulations.
The Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) has produced a training package, Safety Auditing, providing the teaching material to train potential auditors on the usefulness of a safety management system. Upcoming COMAH (see page 35) regulations require a safety management system.
