Keeping cool in the heat and dust of production

Variable speed motors are rapidly growing in popularity in many areas of the process industries. But some processes are clearly more suited to the technology than others. At Blue Circle Cement's plant near Leek in Staffordshire, for example, electrical engineer Tony Carr has opted for an Integral Motor from ABB Motors to cope best with the plant's dusty environment. This is because the electronics are fitted at the non-drive end and cooled by the motor fan.
'Other variable speed motor manufacturers fit the electronics on top of the motor,' he says, 'but as the motor is in a dusty environment I though it important to have a good throughput of air to ensure the air flow apertures do not become blocked and cause the electronics to overheat.'
