Overnight cleaners
15 Jan 2000
SmithKline Beecham has installed a Field Electronics SCADA system on its Gloucestershire soft drinks pilot plant to manage a clean in place (CIP) system that requires no human intervention.
The CIP procedure is designed to flush and sterilise a mixing tank, a pressurised vessel for carbonating fluids, and a bottling machine. Before automation this operation took seven hours and CIP was performed during the day for manual supervision.
With the Field SCADA system, the CIP can be left to work unattended. The procedure now runs automatically overnight without supervision. Safety parameters are built in to shut down the procedure when a fault is detected.
