Goodtech filters salt of the ocean
15 Jan 2000
Industrial filter manufacturer Goodtech Vanpipe has designed an automatic backwashing filter with a capacity of up to 10,500m3 per hour for the Elgin Franklin platform in the North Sea to filter all process sea water.
This is one of the largest coarse sea water filtration systems it has made and comprises of a duty and standby filter which require four large capacity valves to isolate a filter or divert the flow to the standby filter. 36 inch Winn Hi-Seal butterfly valves have been installed on the filter inlets and outlets.
To meet the platform's stringent fire standards, the quarter-turn valves are supplied with PTFE primary seats and secondary metal seats to ensure bi-directional metal to metal sealing if the PTFA is destroyed. This also resists sea water which is aggressive and abrasive with high sand content. The valves are supplied with aluminium bronze bodies to resist the saliferous environment caused by sea splash.
