Ethylene process set for launch
15 Jan 2000
A new process for converting excess acetylene from crackers into ethylene is about to be offered under license from Phillips Petroleum. The process, which has been in operation at the company’s complex in Sweeny, Texas, can increase ethylene yields, reduce operating expenses and reduce off-spec production.
The process uses a novel catalyst, consisting of palladium on alumina, combined with proprietary promoters that increase its selectivity and make it less sensitive to fluctuations in carbon monoxide levels in the feed. It can be retrofitted to existing front-end deethanisers and depropanisers, which are featured on about a quarter of current installed ethylene capacity, says Phillips.
