BASF/Shell venture to Singapore
15 Jan 2000
BASF and Shell have announced their intention to produce styrene monomer (SM) and propylene oxide (PO) in Singapore as part of a 50/50 joint venture.
The plant, to be built at Seraya, will be the second SM/PO on the site. The first, owned and run by a joint venture between Shell and Mitsubishi, has been in operation for a year and a half.
The new plant, scheduled to go on stream at the end of 2001, will use Shell's technology to produce 250,000tpa of PO and 550,000tpa of SM. There are already four plants using this technology around the world, and BASF and Shell are currently building another at Moerdijk, in the Netherlands, due to start up next year.
