Smart work cuts transmission costs for Transco
15 Jan 2000
Cost savings of up to 80 per cent are expected by gas transmission company Transco following a decision to install multivariable transmitters from Rosemount to monitor and control gas distribution within the Sherwood district of its UK East Area office.
Transco originally planned a replacement programme based on a traditional approach of one flow computer per gas stream, with associated differential, absolute pressure and temperature transmitters providing basic measurements. Realising the savings to be obtained by using just one device instead of one for each parameter, Transco opted for Rosemount's multi-variable Model 3095MV transmitter.
This is a Hart 'smart' transmitter for compensated gas, liquid or steam mass flow measurements. It provides differential and absolute pressure measurements and can take a temperature measurement from an external RTD sensor.
Accuracy is better than 1 per cent of mass flow reading over an 8:1 turndown with a standard orifice plate.
Because the one device combines measurement and flow calculation functions, there are considerable savings in hardware installation. Only one hazardous area barrier is needed instead of four and, since all computations are carried out 'on board' the transmitter, no additional electronics are needed.
