New cash boost for university research
15 Jan 2000
Over £75million is to be made available to buy research equipment for universities, the departments of education, trade and industry have announced. The money, from the Joint Research Initiative (JRI) will be spread over 240 projects at 50 universities.
The JRI comprises two competitions. One, funded by the research councils, is open to projects that already have funding from industry or a charity, and awards a maximum amount of £150,000. The other, funded by the higher education funding bodies, is for projects requiring more than this amount.
Some £35million of the JRI money came from public funds, with the rest contributed by industry and charities. Winners of the awards included Paisley University, which is to buy a lime kiln to produce traditional limes by modern methods - these will be used to conserve Scotland's historic buildings.
