Computer tests for Orbit's model
15 Jan 2000
The integrity of shut-off valves is of vital importance in the process industries. So when Orbit Valve wanted to check the ultimate load capacity of a new valve, it called in Strucom Consulting Engineers to carry out a finite element analysis (FEA) on the design.
The first step for SCE was to translate Orbit's CAD drawings into a 3-D finite element model of the sample valve. The model was then subjected to various simulated internal pressure and external bending loads which exceeded design specification. The deformed shapes and stress distributions were then calculated to explore the resulting limiting stress conditions.
According to SCE director Jon Smith, `FEA allows manufacturers to test and validate various designs without the time and expense associated with traditional analysis and physical prototyping.'
